The 1.6 L EcoBoost engine is raced in the British Formula Ford Championship. The units have replaced the original N/A 1.6 L Duratec units, which in turn replaced the 1.8 L Zetec-engined cars. The engine has also been used for the past few seasons in the WRC in the Ford Fiesta.
Overview. The simple explanation is that EcoBoost is a combination of turbocharging and direct fuel injection that improves fuel economy without sacrificing engine power. But that glossy overview hardly explains how the system really works.
Energy from the EcoBoost engine exhaust that would otherwise be wasted rotates a turbine. The turbine is coupled to a compressor that pressurizes incoming air into the combustion chambers, generating a virtually instantaneous surge of on-demand power, significantly increasing output per liter.
EcoBoost improves fuel economy by as much as 20 percent but costs far less than the several thousand dollar increase hybrids and diesels demand. Merging split personalities ‘Eco’-friendly and turbo-‘Boost’, EcoBoost engines offer a unique combination of torque, horsepower, fuel economy, performance, utility,...
What does EcoBoost Mean? If you’ve been following Ford’s rapid ascent to the top of the automotive industry these past few years, you’ve undoubtedly seen an article or two regarding the Ford EcoBoost Engine.
That method works, but it’s not a very precise delivery of fuel. Ecoboost takes highly pressurized fuel and directly injects that fuel into the combustion chamber of each cylinder. It is the direct injection of fuel into the cylinders that gives you better fuel “eco”-nomy.
EcoBoost engines are available right across the Ford range in a whole host of sizes and power outputs. The most popular 1.0-litre is used in the Fiesta, B-Max, Focus, Mondeo , C-Max and Tourneo Connect, producing either 105 or 123hp. The technology finds its way into performance models, too.
EcoBoost engines earn their “Eco” badge when used in place of a larger engine of similar power output. In the F-150 for example, a 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine is used where a 5.8-liter engine was once employed.
EcoBoost demo engine | Source | Dana60Cummins Beginning in the early 2010s, Ford started putting EcoBoost engines in everything from the Fiesta and Focus to the F150. It's a combination of turbocharging and direct fuel injection and is a great way to enhance engine output without just adding displacement.
Sticking with the recent trend of 'less is more', Ford has unveiled its new series of EcoBoost 4-cylinder engines at the Frankfurt motor show today.
